Indoor climate control is a near-universal human need, yet current technologies have severe shortcomings. Most heating systems still burn some type of fossil fuel which produces emissions and risks fire and carbon monoxide poisoning. In hot weather, air conditioning systems consume so much power they strain electrical grids and can cause blackouts; their use will only increase in a warming world. Rising energy costs mean everyone pays more just to be comfortable indoors.
AVS technology could change all that. Both summer cooling and winter heating can be accomplished by a single AVS air conditioner / heat pump combo unit which would consume 60 -75% less energy than current systems, relieving strained grids and shrinking electricity bills without burning fossil fuels. These units can leverage their efficiency and large flow capacity to operate open atmospheric cycles. Open cycles eliminate the need for chemical refrigerants and use only one heat exchanger instead of two, reducing manufacturing costs.
